Tour Description

Arunachal Pradesh holds the most north-eastern position among the other states in the north-east region of India. Arunachal Pradesh borders the states of Assam and Nagaland to the south and shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Myanmar in the east and the People's Republic of China in the north. It is known for the first state in Indian subcontinent to kiss the first ray of the Sun. Itanagar is the capital of the state.

Tour Itinerary

DAY 1 –Guwahati- BALIPARA, Assam

Received at Guwahati airport and later drive to Balipara, Tezpur (210 kms / 05 hrs). On arrival check in at one of the Bungalows of Wild Mahseer Tea Planter Bungalow either at Golden Tips/Silver Tips/Second Flush/Ambrosia Bungalow. Overnight at the Bungalow.

The Wild Mahseer Tea Planter Bungalows is located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River. The Adabari Tea Estate, which originally belonged to the British Assam Tea Company, goes back to the year 1900. The property is a historic one characterized by its Victorian architecture and has spacious rooms across four individual bungalows. The accommodation is located on 22 acres of tropical land surrounded by tea gardens and the land has been bestowed with a wide variety of trees, plants, flowers, insects and birds. The property has been renamed Wild Mahseer (after a popular fish found in the Brahmaputra and Jia bharali river nearby.

DAY 2 – BALIPARA - DIRANG, ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Today early morning drive to to Dirang, (190 kms/ 07 hrs), the sub – divisional headquarters of West Kameng district situated (4900 ft) between Bomdila and Tawang. Steeped in scenic beauty, this town is situated in the valley of river Kameng. This place is inhabited by the Monpa tribe. On arrival check into hotel / Dirang Boutique Cottage.

DIRANG - Is the ideal gateway to the West Kameng district with beautiful valleys surrounded by apple orchards and sheep breeding farms.  It is famous for hot water springs  people can bathe in to cure skin ailments. Places worth visiting here are the National Yak Research and Breeding Center at Nigmadung, Sheep Breeding Farm and the Sangti Valley where Siberian black necked storks visit during winter.  Monpas constitute 5% of the total tribal community of  Arunachal Pradesh and  inhabit the Tawang District and West Kameng District. The  Monpa community is known for their artistic creations that include beautiful Thangka paintings, carpet making, weaving and wood carving. They are adept in making paper from the Sukso tree.

DAY 3 – DIRANG - TAWANG, ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Today after breakfast drive to Tawang (145 kms /06-07 hrs). The road moves along the Dirang river and then the climb starts and reach Sela. This route to Sela pass from Dirang is sparsely populated and the forest cover is alpine though degraded. Secondary succession of rhododendrons is abundant on the wayside. This famous pass is 13,700 ft and is snow bound most of the year.

Tawang, the land of the Monpas, has been blessed by nature as also with a rich historical heritage which makes it a very sought after tourist destination and so is on the wish list of many travellers. In 1959, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama fled from Tibet and entered  India through Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh  which has the oldest and  second largest monastery of Asia  and is  also the birth place of the 6th Dalai Lama.  Arunachal Pradesh or the land of “Dawn lit Mountains” shares its borders with the Assam plains and the snow capped peaks of Tibet.  It is home to 26 indigenous tribes as also to a staggering five hundred species of orchids –found in its glacial terrain, alpine meadows and subtropical rainforests.

DAY 04 & 05 – At Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Over next two days we explore Tawang . We visit Tawang Monastery (400 yrs old with 500 resident monks and center of Mahayana Buddhism), Tawang Memorial, Ani Gompa, Crafts Emporium etc. Tawang monastery was built in and around 1643-7. Away from the town (2 km) the walls were fortified in medieval times to withstand attacks from the Bhutanese. Around 300 monks live here. This is the fountain head of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Overnight at Tawang.

Tawang Monastery which is an important seat of Mahayana Buddhism is located here. This world famous monastery of the Gelukpa was founded during the 17th century by Mera Lama Lodre Gyaltso, who is considered as a contemporary of the 5th Dalai Lama. It is Asia’s second largest monastery and India’s largest which controls 17 Gompas in the region. The highlights of this monastery are the imposing three-storied assembly hall and the 28 ft high golden statue of Lord Buddha. There is also a big library, which has an impressive collection of ancient books and manuscripts. The famous Buddhist gold inscribed scriptures Kangyur and Tangyur are preserved here.

Urgyelling Monastery is considered sacred as it is the birth place of Thangyang Gyatso, the sixth Dalai Lama

DAY 6 – Tawang - Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh

Today morning we drive to Bomdila (190 kms/ 7 hrs). En-route visit Nuranang waterfall and Sela Pass. This famous pass is 13,700 ft and is snow bound most of the year. You will pass by a small lake called Paradise Lake and Sela Temple at Sela Pass (13700 ft). From Sela it is downhill to Tawangchu River via Jaswantgarh (a memorial for the 1962 war hero). On arrival check in at hotel in Bomdilla for 01 night. Later in the evening visit a Buddhist Monastery at Bomdila. Overnight at the hotel.

BOMDILA - Bomdila, the headquarter of West Kameng District is a small beautiful town situated at a height of about 8000ft. above sea level. It is inhabited by tribes like Aka (Hrusso), Miji (Sajalong), Monpa, Sherdukpen, and Bogun (Khawas). The Buddhist monastery of Bomdila is the repository of culture and is among the primary attractions of the area. Bomdila attracts tourists with its cool climate, apple orchards,  people, snow-capped Himalayan peaks and Buddhist Gompas. The craft center, ethnographic museum and emporium  are worth a visit. One can also see various snow clad mountain peaks from Bomdila, including the Kangto and Gorichen Peaks which are the highest peaks of the state.

DAY 7 - BOMDILA - KAZIRANGA, ASSAM

After breakfast drive to Kaziranga National Park (240 kms/08 hrs) and check in at the hotel for 02 nights. Overnight at the hotel.

KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK - Kaziranga National Park is a World Heritage Site, where more than 75% of the world’s total population of the great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros can be found. It lies on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River and is one of the oldest parks of Assam. Besides rhinos, the Asiatic Water Buffalo, Elephants, Royal Bengal Tigers, Swamp deer, Barking deer and Hog deer can be seen. About 400 species of birds are found in Kaziranga National Park. To name a few- Swamp Francolin, Great Hornbill, Pallas Fish Eagle, Pied Falconets, Greater Adjutant Stork, Long Billed Vulture. There is no telling what one might find in Kaziranga but it is always a great experience. The specialty here is the Blue naped pitta among a host of Raptors and Waterfowl. The adjoining buffer areas are worth a try too, as numerous rare sightings are reported regularly.

DAY 8 - AT KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK , ASSAM

Full day game drives inside the park exploring the beautiful forests and grasslands of the Kaziranga National Park with morning and afternoon Jeep Safaris on exclusive open top jeep. Later in the afternoon visit Orchid Park cum and Biodiversity Conservation Centre and enjoy a cultural evening. Overnight at the hotel.

JEEP SAFARI:

Forenoon: Entry time between 07:00 to 09:30 Hours. Visiting time is till 12:00 Noon

Afternoon: Entry time between 13:30 to 15:00 Hours. Visiting time is till sunset.

Jeep Safaris are permitted on pre-defined tourist circuits within Kaziranga National Park- currently at the following points:  

  1. Mihimukh in Central Range at Kohora
  2. Bagori in Western Range at Bagori
  3. Agaratoli in Eastern Range at Agaratoli
  4. Burapahar Range

The Central Range passes through the entire habitat spectrum from ox-bow lakes, savannah woodland to swamp forests. It is very good for mammal sightings as well as for birds (Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Great Hornbill, Rufous Woodpecker). While driving along the trail, one can see rows of Indian Roofed and Tent Turtles (Kachuga tecta and Kachuga tentoria). Water Monitors Varanus salvator are sometimes spotted in the beels.

The Eastern Range abounds in water birds such as bar-headed geese, falcated duck, grey-headed lapwing and spot-billed pelican (a colony of 200 pairs of this globally threatened species nesting on the Bombax trees can be found here).

The Western Range has the highest density of rhinos as this part of the park is swampier. It has grassland birds and raptors (swamp francolin, pallas's fish eagle etc). Smooth Indian Otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) can sometimes be seen fishing in it’s ox-bow lakes.

The Kaziranga Orchid Park cum Biodiversity Conservation Centre is spread across 16 bighas of land. It also has a photo gallery of 500 orchids, a greenhouse, lakes with boating and angling facilities and small tree-houses, among other attractions. The basic purpose of opening this park was to conserve local varieties of orchids, flowers, fruits, fish and also to spread cultural awareness knowledge . Those visiting the park will also be able to taste juices of local fruits, pithas (local cakes) and enjoy Borgeet and Xattriya dance performances as well. Experts have been involved to give shape to the park. Khonjit Gogoi, a teacher who has been preserving orchids for the past 20 years pitched in to shape the park. As did Mahan Bora, a farmer, with his 10-year experience in collecting paddy varieties, Kunti Bora, an expert in medicinal plants, who helped in opening a medicinal plants sales counter, Bihu expert, Dhaneswar Saikia who showcases the original Bihu dance forms and music while Xattriya expert, Biplob Baruah for Xattriya dance training.

DAY 09 – KAZIRANGA - GUWAHATI FLY OUT

In time transfer to Guwahati airport (04-04 ½ hrs) to board flight for onward destination.
